What is the Difference Between Brass and Bronze Art?

Q: How can you tell the structural difference between  bronze and brass. Is bronze magnetic?

A: Initially, the difference between brass and bronze consisted of whether the metal was an alloy of copper and zinc or copper and tin, respectively. Now however, there are so many different alloys of each, developed for different purposes, that some brasses can have tin in them and some bronzes include zinc. Today, bronze is generally considered an alloy consisting of more than 85% copper, while brass contains significantly less copper.  Neither bronze nor brass are magnetic, they are non-ferrous alloys. While some bronze alloys include very small amounts of iron, they do not include high enough quantities to make the alloys magnetic. A metal must have significant iron content, referred to as ferrous alloy, to be magnetic.

Brass tends to be more yellow in color than bronze due to the lower copper content. Bronze art tends to be more red than brass.  However, because there are so many different alloys, it is not really possible to make any definitive identification without having a metallurgist examine the alloys in question.
