Q & A: What kind of wax can be used for lost wax casting?

lost wax castingQ & A: What kind of wax can be used for lost wax casting?

Q: For a sculpture (wax, with styrofoam/cloth/wood armature) destined for lost wax bronze casting , can I use a spray wax for coating certain parts of the armature?  If so, what product would you recommend?

A: I have never used or heard of any kind of spray wax formulated specifically for the lost wax process.  However, I imagine that just about any wax would work fine.  As long as it has a flash point low enough to burnout completely during the process, then you should be good.  Most foundries use flash-fire dewax kilns at around 1800 degrees Fahrenheit, which I would think would not allow any kind of wax to linger for long.  If you have any question as to whether or not it will work, just make up a small test piece using the spray wax and ask the foundry to try it out.  Most foundries would not charge you for a small test.
